Sleep Apnea Treatments

Sleep apnea can be understood as a stop or arrest in the breathing while sleeping along with the conditions like insomnia and snoring. If breathing stops for 10 seconds or longer then it is considered sleep apnea and if it repeats for more than 5 times in an hour, then it is harmful to your body and needs to be considered very seriously. An obstruction in the upper airway causes obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. During these periods, the person may emit a choking or snorting noise which then leads to the person waking up multiple times throughout the night.

Our sleep specialist Dr. Goodwin explains and offers one of the best treatments for sleep apnea and snoring at Sleep Matters in Ora Valley, a suburban town of Tucson, AZ.

If it is left untreated, then it leads to some health risk and also life risk which includes heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, heart failures, diabetes, depression, regular and constant headaches, fails to give attention towards your office work or at school/college lectures, automobile accidents. There are a variety of treatments available and it depends on the severity of the problem. If the problem is in the initial stages, then it can be cured by a few at home remedies. Below are some of those home remedies to cure sleep apnea:

  • Changing sleeping position
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Avoiding smoke
  • Losing weight
  • Avoiding sleeping pills
  • Avoiding sleeping on the back

And if the severity is more, then the candidate has to undergo few treatments and in some cases, they might need to undergo a minor surgery too. The duration of the treatment depends on the doctor and the type of the treatment.

Types of treatments:

Continous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP): It is a most commonly used device for the treatment of sleep apnea. This device comprises a mask and a device which keeps passing the air to keep the airway open. One end of this device is a mask and it should be worn on the face and another end is attached to the device which keeps passing the pressured air to keep the airway open. When the airway is kept open, then it will ease the patient to breathe normally and regularly without any stoppage.

Sleep appliances: These are the specially designed custom devices designed by the sleep specialists based on the patient's needs. These devices help in keeping the airway open and helps to keep breathing normal while you sleep.

Surgery: if you are having enlarged tonsils, lower jaw with overbite causing the throat to be too narrow or a deviated nasal septum, then it is highly recommended for the surgery. Most common types of surgeries are:

Nasal Surgery: Deviated septum will be corrected with the help of nasal surgery by making proper space in between to keep the airway proper block free.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): The soft tissue on the back of the throat and palate will be removed by surgery to increase the width of the airway at the opening of the throat.

Mandibular maxillomandibular advancement surgery: A surgery will be made to correct the few facial issues and throat obstructions which will contribute to sleep apnea and snoring
